Ooooh. That’s why. They want to sell you online backup space, and online backup is awful over a slow upstream.

Hopefully they won’t pull a huge network neutrality violation and throttle the competitors in online backup such as Mozy and Carbonite. (Cable ISPs have throttled Vonage to make it unusable so you need to switch to their own branded version of the same service for $30/month.)

Despite the reasoning behind this, it’s a great move, and I hope other ISPs follow suit.
